G-20 Establishes Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists

Given the significant challenge of increasing agricultural production by 60 percent globally in order to meet anticipated demands for food by 2050, it is critical to maximize the effectiveness of global agricultural research and development investments and strengthen platforms for collaboration.

In September, the G-20 took an important step toward this goal in convening the first G-20 Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists, or high-level agricultural research officials from G-20 member countries, other interested countries, and international research organizations. This group intends to meet annually to identify global research priorities and targets, facilitate collaboration between public and private sector organizations in key areas most likely to drive sustainable productivity gains, identify avenues to better coordinate resources and existing initiatives to support these priorities, and track progress on established goals over time.
