On September 6, the European Union (EU), and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DfID), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to align their assistance in support of the upgrade of a 103 kilometer road that connects Mikumi, Kidatu, and Ifakara in the Kilombero Valley. The road infrastructure upgrade project supports our mutual commitment to further expand economic growth in the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT).

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding to contribute to the completion of the Kilombero road is just the beginning of work to enhance Tanzania’s agricultural sector through changes in policy, cooperation with the private sector, and the use of new technologies to increase production.

The signing took place as part of a workshop on accelerating agricultural transformation in Tanzania through partnerships. The workshop builds on the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, a partnership between the G8, the African Union, Tanzania, and other African countries. Over the next 10 years, the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition aims to lift 50 million people out of poverty through sustained agricultural growth. The signing of the Memorandum marks a definitive first step towards this goal with three development partners confirming their intention to earmark necessary funding.
